BRUSSELS (AP) — European trade unions have called for a day of protests across the continent to protest budget cuts and austerity programs. Wednesday's call came on the eve of a European Union summit seeking to set budget rules and force governments to contain runaway spending. Unions fear workers will be hurt. The Dec. 15 day of protest would seek to pressure EU government leaders meeting the next day. It would call on them to safeguard workers' rights and tax banks and financial services more heavily. Unions organized a march of some 100,000 protesters in Brussels on Sep. 29.
