A general strike led to widespread shutdowns of public services, including of schools, hospitals, border crossings and transport facilities. The strike was called by unions to protest austerity measures put in place by the government of Prime Minister Janez Jansa, who is currently under severe pressure to resign over a corruption scandal. Both the prime minister and his opposition counterpart have been recently implicated by allegations they hid wealth that they could not account for.
