A state of emergency has been declared in the Arusha region in northern Tanzania due to infiltration of firearms. Security has been intensified in the region, with Loliondo Division of Ngorongoro District particularly affected. Public meetings and other communal gatherings are banned. District officials say weapons are flowing in from Kenya. Some 11 Kenyans have been arrested amid ongoing border tensions between Tanzania and Kenya in Loliondo, with recent incidents including the banning of cross-border travel for traders.
