Striking state workers have closed Lilongwe International Airport in a bid to pressure President Joyce Banda to increase wages by 65 percent and not introduce austerity measures. Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines cancelled flights to Lilongwe. The public sector strike began on 13 February, closing schools and disrupting public services, but has only just spread to disrupting flights.
