2 Atlantic tropical depressions, 2 Pacific hurricanes threaten coasts

(RNN) - Two tropical depressions are swirling in the Atlantic basin; meanwhile, Hawaii is bracing for two hurricanes in the Pacific.

The coast of North Carolina - from Cape Lookout to Oregon Inlet and Pamlico Sound - is under a tropical storm warning as Tropical Depression Eight approaches. It is 95 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, NC. Maximum sustained winds with this storm remain at 35 mph as Eight creeps to the northwest at 6 mph.

A turn toward the north is expected Tuesday, and a turn toward the northeast is expected Wednesday. Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center say the storm's center will graze the Outer Banks of North Carolina Tuesday afternoon or evening on its way north. Slowly strengthening, it may become a tropical storm by Tuesday.

Also puttering along with 35 mph winds is Tropical Depression Nine, which is moving toward the west at 7 mph about 270 west of Havana, Cuba. The system is expected to become a tropical storm later Tuesday.

Though there are no watches and warnings with Nine, people in central and southern Florida are advised to keep track of this storm, as it is forecast to slice over the peninsula - making landfall in the Big Bend area of the Florida Gulf Coast - before heading back into the Atlantic, where it will become a concern for the East Coast, particularly Georgia and the Carolinas.

The Atlantic's only hurricane, Hurricane Gaston, is not expected to impact the U.S. as it moves to the northeast, away from land.

Pacific

Meanwhile, Hawaii has its own problems - dangerous category 4 Hurricane Madeline in the central Pacific and category 3 Hurricane Lester in the East Pacific, according to KHNL.

Madeline, with winds of 130 mph, is expected to pass very close to Hawaii's Big Island by Wednesday. Although some weakening is expected before Madeline gets to Hawaii, it will still pack dangerous weather - torrential rainfall of 5 to 10 inches or greater in some spots and the likelihood of destructive hurricane-force winds.

Flash flood and high surf advisories have been issued ahead of Madeline.

Hurricane Lester, currently in the eastern Pacific, may impact Hawaii over the Labor Day weekend, KHNL said. The storm is packing winds of 125 mph as it moves to the west at a quick click, 14 mph.
