Risks and Precautions:

Civil unrest is not a problem in Estonia, and there have been no incidents of terrorism directed toward American interests.  Large public gatherings and demonstrations may occur on occasion, caused mainly by domestic political issues. During periods of darkness, reflectors must be worn by pedestrians.
Estonia is a relatively safe country, although crime in Tallinn’s “Old Town” is an ongoing concern, particularly during the summer tourist season.

Mortality Statistics:

Infant MR total:  7.59 deaths/1,000 live births
Life expectancy at birth:  TOTAL 72.3 years (male 66.87/female 78.07)

Immunization Indicators:

Required: None
Recommended: Hep A & B, Rabies, Typhoid
Boosters: MMR, DPT

Infectious Disease Concerns:

Tickborne encephalitis occurs in the southern part of the nontropical forest belt in Europe and Asia. Most intense transmission has been reported in Russia, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, and Slovenia. Travelers are at risk who visit or work in forested areas during the summer months and who consume unpasteurized dairy products. Vaccine for this disease is not available in the United States at this time. A number of rickettsial infections also occur in this region.
Other infections that tend to occur more often in longer-term travelers (or in immigrants from the region) include tuberculosis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C.

Overall Quality of Medical Services:

The quality of medical care in Estonia continues to improve but still falls short of Western standards. Estonia has many highly trained medical professionals, but hospitals and clinics still suffer from a lack of equipment and resources.
