HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — A typhoon watch is in effect for Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands as a tropical storm moves toward the islands.

The Pacific Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1dzNFgz ) that the watch means typhoon-strength winds of 74 mph or higher are possible within 48 hours.

The National Weather Service says tropical Storm Chan-hom, which is expected to be a typhoon before it reaches the Marianas, is expected to pass between Guam and Rota.

The system is predicted to have maximum sustained winds of about 105 mph when it moves past Guam over the weekend.
